Court Court of First Instance Judge Full Bio Stefan Johansson has been the Presiding Judge of the Nordic-Baltic Regional Division of the UPC since June 2023. Stefan is also a Senior Judge at Stockholm District Court, where he currently works part-time as Head of a Division. He has been a judge at Stockholm District Court since 2013. This national court of first instance has exclusive competence on patent cases in Sweden. Since 2016, the exclusive competence also covers administrative appeals from the Swedish Intellectual Property Office on e.g. patents (cf. BoA). From 2015 to 2022, Stefan was also Vice Chair of the Swedish Gene Technology Advisory Board. This Government Agency has the task to monitor developments in the field of gene technology, oversee ethical issues, and give advice on use of gene technology.Before 2013, when Stefan came back to Stockholm District Court, Stefan worked almost 11 years at the Swedish Ministry of Justice (Division for Intellectual Property Rights). At the Ministry, his main responsibility was issues relating to the enforcement of intellectual property rights, including the Enforcement Directive (2004/48/EC), but he was also involved in work on substantive patent law (e.g. the implementation of the Biotech Directive, 98/44/EC). Earlier in his career, Stefan was an associate judge.Stefan has been an expert in several national inquiries on intellectual property rights. He lectures on intellectual property rights and enforcement. He has participated on several international seminars, workshops, and trainings focusing on patent law and/or the UPC, including the judicial internship at the EPO Boards of Appeal. He was a member of the Expert Group of practitioners for the UPC.
